Solon Salutes: September 25, 2020

 SOLON SALUTES

One of the beautiful benefits of our schedule this year is watching students and faculty get involved in courses that aren't normally a part of our traditional schedule. There's a lot of joy that's being spread by learning about new cultures, building for the community, and enjoying some fitness in places we don't normally get to go to during school hours. These are just a few pictures of the many enrichment courses that are being offered this quarter for students who do not have two courses scheduled.

MHS NEWS and EVENTS

  • Picture Day is on October 7th: Please note that this date is on a day when our students will be learning remotely. All students who would like school pictures will enter through the auditorium doors, at their assigned time, with masks. Please see this flyer for more details about the process and schedule. Students should share with their TA if they will not be able to make the TA time at 10:15 due to being at school for pictures.
    • 7:30-8:15: 12th graders
    • 8:15-9:00: 9th graders
    • 9:00-9:45: 10th graders
    • 9:45-10:30: 11th graders
  • MRPS/MHS Chromebooks Issued to Students:  We are excited to have had the opportunity to provide every student at MHS with a Chromebook. New this year, students will be transporting their Chromebook home and back to school.  We expect students to shut down and charge the device every night. It's critical that students remember to bring the device to school every day. Please help your child with these new routines. Please take a moment to read through the documents to the left and review the expectations with your students.
  • Absences and Appointments: Please be reminded that all appointments should be scheduled outside of your child's school day. When a student misses a class, they are missing quite a bit of instruction within a quarter. Absences in our new schedule means a student is missing out on important information, instruction, in-class support. Although the importance of being in school is no different than past years, the time missed this year can have an impact on the student's ability to stay caught up on current instruction and learning.
  • Wednesday Remote Days: Just a reminder that every student is expected to attend TA each Wednesday at 10:15. Students should reach out to their TA to find out how to access the Google Meet link for their designated TA if they don't know already.  Students who attend CVCC are expected to be attending these meetings as well. Additionally, unless otherwise noted, each student will need to also attend their Green class at 11:00-12:45 and their White class at 1:15. We do consider these absences if students do not attend.
  • How to interact with PowerSchool to see a student's progress: Please check out this short video on how to access a student's progress and performance in PowerSchool. We have found that our students and families don't always know how to navigate scores in PowerSchool, and this will hopefully provide a guide to accessing a students progress through formative assessments (practice that shows progress or a lack thereof) and summatives (which is the final score of the unit after the formative assessments have been given). You should see a student's progress in each of their courses on each Wednesday. If you are unable to access PowerSchool (Parent/Student Sign In Link) you can reach out to our PowerSchool technology expert for MHS, Aaron Kennison, at aaronkennison@mpsvt.org.
  • Permits to Park on Campus: All students who drive to school must have an MHS Student Parking Permit. Download on your computer and return by email to Kim Kidney at kimk@mpsvt.org by September 28th.
  • No School on October 12th: (ALTERNATIVE SCHEDULE) There is no school on October 12th which means that week will be a no-remote learning week. We'll follow the first week's schedule of Tuesday and Friday as white days in person with Wednesday and Thursday green days in person.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Do you want to partner with MHS? We are continuing to seek safe and empowering partnerships between our school community and our greater Montpelier community this school year.  We would very much value your consideration of partnering with our MHS students in whatever way may seem right for you.  This survey was put out earlier this school year, and we wanted to loop back to it to see if additional community members wanted to consider a safe and empowering school/community partnership this year.  The survey takes about 4 minutes to complete.  Genuine appreciation to the many folks who have already completed the survey, and many thanks to those who will consider the opportunity to engage and empower students this year in any number of ways.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Please visit our MRPS District Health and Wellness Page for all COVID-19 related documents and information.

VTVLC COMMUNICATION (CVCC) https://mrpsvirtualacademy.blogspot.com/

For VTVLC and CVCC Virtual Learners: As announced in the 9/23 Virtual Academy Blog post, we've been working to sort out opportunities for our virtual scholars to access school photos. We'd like your help in planning. Please complete this survey (one for your family) by Friday to indicate if you are interested in attending an in-person photoshoot at Montpelier High School with LifeTouch Photography to have your students school pictures taken. The date or dates are not yet set for this event. Each family would be asked to sign up for a 10 minute appointment to avoid congregating and to leave time for health screening and sanitization procedures. Prints are available for sale and an order form will be distributed for you to bring with you. All are invited to have their photo taken, even if you don't order prints. No one is required to have their photo taken. We will be in touch to share more details with the families who express interest via this form in the near future and as plans develop.
