Solon Salutes: November 2, 2020

                                               SOLON SALUTES

A big Solon Salute goes out to Sophia Clark who has been named to the Vermont Climate Council.  This is a newly formed entity created by the recently passed Global Warming Solutions Act.  There is one youth member, and there were many applicants. Please check out her support and work for the global climate crisis HERE. Way to go Sophia! Making the world a better place and representing Montpelier and MHS with pride!

The boys soccer team is off to the semi-finals of the D2 Playoffs! The Solons beat Harwood on Saturday and will now host U-32 (probably) on Weds of this week at 5pm with a trip to the finals on the line! Tickets and live streaming information to come. Good luck, Solons! The JV team ended their season on the 24th as they took on U-32. With a bunch of talented and committed underclassmen on the JV team, the V team will have a bright future for many years to come!

Cross Country competed in the state championship this past weekend at Thetford and did a great job! You can view the results by going to (I will send you the link to the results on Saturday). It was a great season for the Solon runners and while they didn't get to race in as many races as they would have liked, their effort never wavered!

The field hockey team finished their season this past Monday dropping their D3 quarterfinal matchup against Missisquoi 4-2. The Solons enjoyed their best season since 2001 in terms of record and winning percentage! With a young core of players returning they have many more strong seasons ahead.

Although a different season, our football players played well under the circumstances and made it to the playoffs this past Saturday against St. Johnsbury Academy. Unfortunately, they lost but it was a well-played game. Congratulations on a great season!

Girls volleyball finished up their very unusual season this week. The Solons finished the season 4-4 which for only a second year varsity program is unbelievable progress! For those that don't know, volleyball is usually an indoor sport but this season all games and practices have been held outside in the elements! Despite that change, the Solons and the JV Solons showed amazing resiliency and commitment to what could have been a very disruptive season. Their effort and dedication to a sport many have only recently picked up, made us all proud!

The girls soccer team fell to Rice in the quarterfinals of the D2 GSOC playoffs on Saturday to end their season. While an early exit is disappointing there were a lot of positive moments throughout the season. They earned the #4 seed in the playoffs and was able to defeat crosstown rival U-32 in one of the more exciting games of the year along with beating Middlebury in the playoffs at home. While it'll be tough to replace the pieces we are losing, the program, both JV and V, have a lot of strong players coming through and they should be a force to reckon with for years to come!

MHS NEWS and EVENTS

  • Traveling over the break? Whether you are traveling over the break or not, we are asking every family to return the form that was sent home last week with Superintendent Libby Bonesteel's letter. All forms are due to the main office by November 12th. MRPS will be tracking this information and reaching out to families who share they are going to be traveling or having visitors.
  • Picture Retake Day for both VTVLC and MHS students November 18th. Please see this flyer for additional details.
  • End of Quarter: This Friday, November 6th is the end of Quarter 1. Quarter 2 begins on Monday, November 9th. Grades will be finalized for Quarter 1 on November 13th. If your student is attending an enrichment course for Quarter 2, we will begin those courses on Monday, November 16th. Students and families should hear from their enrichment teacher this week.
  • Can you believe it? The holidays are approaching! In an effort to streamline Thanksgiving support in a safe and efficient way this year, we would like to share an incredible Thanksgiving resource with the MRPS community. National Life and other community partners are sponsoring the 48th Annual Free Thanksgiving Meal. Meals can be picked up or delivery can be arranged. See the attached flyer for more details and to make a reservation via phone or email. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED BY NOVEMBER 18TH.  Questions? Contact your school social worker, Ellia Cohen at ElliaCohen@mpsvt.org or 802.267.4041.
  • PowerSchool Access and Checking Grades: Have you wondered how to check your student's progress on PowerSchool? Well, this video is a short tutorial on how to access PowerSchool and check on grades. It's a quick one and well worth the watch!
  • Reporting Absences: If a student is absent for a class or for the day, parents/guardians should make sure to call Kim Kidney at MHS 225-8000 (or email kimk@mpsvt.org) to let her know the reason for the student's absence. Otherwise, MHS will mark it as unexcused until we are able to make contact with an adult who provides an excuse that is in accordance with the MRPS District Attendance Policy
  • MRPS/MHS Chromebooks Issued to Students:  We are excited to have had the opportunity to provide every student at MHS with a Chromebook. New this year, students will be transporting their Chromebook home and back to school.  We expect students to shut down and charge the device every night. It's critical that students remember to bring the device to school every day. Please help your child with these new routines. Please take a moment to read through the documents to the left and review the expectations with your students.
  • Check out our Quarter 2 Enrichment Offerings for students who aren't fully scheduled. Quarter 1 was a huge success, and we can only hope to continue to build upon non-traditional course offerings for our students to build skills while having some fun.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Please visit our MRPS District Health and Wellness Page for all COVID-19 related documents and information.

MASK QUALITY:

Masks that are single layers are not recommended. Masks need to be 2 layers or more. The disposable masks, otherwise known as surgical masks, do offer a little more protection than cloth masks. Masking only works when we are all masking as a group.

POP UP TESTING:

Here is the link for pop up testing. This is for people who are not having symptoms. It looks like they want you to make an appointment instead of walking in, although there seems to be some walk in’s available in certain places.
