Solon Salutes: October 19, 2020

                                                   SOLON SALUTES

A big Solon Salute goes out to the Seniors of the boys' soccer team who celebrated their final senior night on Saturday with a win in OT against Peoples Academy! (Evan Fuller, Bela Hughes, Tyler Ricker, Leo Riby-Williams, Quinn Mills, Brecken Shea, Bobby Cody)

Big shout out to the JV and Varsity Girls' Volleyball teams who beat Enosburg last week in a shut out! Way to go girls!

Anne Watson's Physics class took on the egg bungee jump challenge, and it was a huge success. No eggs broken which means there was some really solid planning and thinking in play ahead of time!

Another Solon Salute goes out to those students who have volunteered their time to work with the Winooski Canoe Access Project. Here are the final stages of their project!

Check out our Quarter 2 Enrichment Offerings for students who aren't fully scheduled. Quarter 1 was a huge success, and we can only hope to continue to build upon non-traditional course offerings for our students to build skills while having some fun.

MHS NEWS and EVENTS

  • End of Quarter: November 6th is the end of Quarter 1. By the end of this week, on October 23rd, all students and families scheduled for Quarter 2 classes will receive their cohort information from their teachers. Please know that teachers will do their best to place students based on their cohort request; however, sometimes this may not be feasible. There is no guarantee of placement unless an extenuating circumstance has already been discussed with administration.  Should a student not be scheduled for a course in Quarter 2, an email was sent out with a form to all unscheduled students to sign up for Quarter 2 Enrichment Offerings. If a student does not sign up, the guidance counselor will be contacting the student/guardians this week.
  • Reporting Absences: If a student is absent for a class or for the day, parents/guardians should make sure to call Kim Kidney at MHS 225-8000 (or email kimk@mpsvt.org) to let her know the reason for the student's absence. Otherwise, MHS will mark it as unexcused until we are able to make contact with an adult who provides an excuse that is in accordance with the MRPS District Attendance Policy
  • Voting is extremely important to a healthy democracy but in 2016 only around half of eligible voters in Vermont voted. Even if you are not old enough to vote, you can help! (And you will get a cool mask in the process.) A quick and effective step is to become a Vote Safe VT Ambassador. Contact heathermc@mpsvt.org with any questions.
  • MRPS/MHS Chromebooks Issued to Students:  We are excited to have had the opportunity to provide every student at MHS with a Chromebook. New this year, students will be transporting their Chromebook home and back to school.  We expect students to shut down and charge the device every night. It's critical that students remember to bring the device to school every day. Please help your child with these new routines. Please take a moment to read through the documents to the left and review the expectations with your students.

Can I still check out books from our library? Yes, you can! Watch this quick slideshow to learn how. Please email Sue Monmaney at susanm@mpsvt.org if you have any questions.

Co-Curricular Clubs/Activities: Please visit our list of co-curricular opportunities that MHS is offering up this year. Some have already started to meet, but it's never too late to join!

    HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Please visit our MRPS District Health and Wellness Page for all COVID-19 related documents and information.

    MASK QUALITY:

Masks that are single layers are not recommended. Masks need to be 2 layers or more. The disposable masks, otherwise known as surgical masks, do offer a little more protection than cloth masks. Masking only works when we are all masking as a group.

    POP UP TESTING:

Here is the link for pop up testing. This is for people who are not having symptoms. It looks like they want you to make an appointment instead of walking in, although there seems to be some walk in’s available in certain places.

    SYMPTOMS/ILLNESS:

With any cold or illness, regardless if it’s a mild symptom or not, you MUST stay home. Please review the following link about signs/symptoms of Covid-19.
