MHS Update: September 11, 2020

Solon Salutes

Congrats to Will Bruzesse who won the U18 state championship this summer in slalom waterskiing. It sounds like he's on his way to training for a berth in the nationals in 2021! Way to go Will! Check out the article in The Times Argus!

A big Solon Salute goes out to all of our teachers, staff, and students who have made this first week a great start to an unprecedented school year. We are proud of your levels of responsibility, hard work, good attitude, and we hope to continue this wave of awesomeness through the year!

Note from the Principal: What a great start to our week back! We couldn't have asked for a better start with our students and staff this week--other than the false fire drill the universe planted on us in our 3rd day. (all is well)  It has been amazing to see our students back in the building, and although it looks different, they bring an energy that has been missed for quite some time. In addition, I just want to share how proud I am of our students being responsible in their mask wearing while in school and following directions in a completely new environment.  They truly showed all of us and each other what 'Taking Care of Yourself, Each Other, and This Place" means this week.

As a side note, Please remember to send the forms that were sent to families/guardians on August 31st back to school with your child. (health questionnaire, lunch forms, permission form, etc).

Last, I am only publishing blog posts without sending emails as a reminder.  Please spread the word that if our MHS community wants to stay up-to-date with MHS information, then they'll need to subscribe to the blog or check once a week! Thank you!

SCHOOL INFORMATION

Next Week's Schedule: September 14th-18th Schedule (and from here on out):

  • Monday and Thursday: Green Days
  • Tuesday and Friday: White Days
  • Wednesday: Remote learning and TA
    • TA: 10:15-11:00 (for all students--VTVLC, CVCC, MHS)
    • 11:00-12:45 for Green Day
    • 1:15-3:00 for White Day
  • Masks are a Must : Per Superintendent Bonesteel's email last week, masks are required by the State and AOE. Students must wear masks that cover their mouth and nose at all times while in the building. Please see the poster for more details.
  • WINOOSKI RIVER CANOE ACCESS PROJECT (looking for students!)

MHS will be working with The Friends of the Winooski organization to plant trees and shrubs on the bare areas of the access.  We will help to construct a boat chute and install a sign and art sculpture into cement forms.

On days with inclement weather students will design and work on MHS community projects in the lab, including benches.

The Winooski River itself will benefit since the stabilization of erosion on the stream bank will help protect water quality and aquatic habitat by preventing sediment from reaching the river. Trees and shrubs will help shade the river to keep it cool, a requirement for many aquatic species.  Downstream wildlife and human communities will benefit by having cleaner water, and since sediment from erosion, which is bound for phosphorus, so Lake Champlain will benefit.  The river also benefits when more people appreciate its beauty and recreational potential since they are then more likely to want to protect it as a resource and community asset.

Facilitator(s): Brain Gallagher and Jason Miles
Please contact Brian Gallagher at briang@mpsvt.org by Monday, September 14th if you or your student would like to participate in this opportunity on Green days (Mon/Thurs) beginning at 12:30.
  • Enrichment Courses: Students/families should have received or will receive confirmation of the enrichment course their student signed up for 1st Quarter from the teacher(s) of that course. Our green day enrichment course starts on Monday with the white day enrichment starting on Tuesday. If your student has an open space in their schedule, we have sent emails to the students/families to sign up for a course. We encourage all of our students to take a full schedule throughout their year. Enrichment courses are completely focused on skills as opposed to content, and they can be an awesome way to experience school and build relationships outside of the traditional setting.
  • College Essay Writing Support: DMA is happy to offer an enrichment class titled, "College Essay Writing" for those of you with early decision deadlines of Nov. 1st.  The course will be offered on Green Days either AM or PM.  Please sign up with the attached form by Monday, September 14th. Students will be informed of cohort by Wednesday, September 16th with a start date of Thursday, September 17th. Please contact Dan Miller-Arsenault with questions.
  • Ordering Meals: We've created a table for all students/ families to understand how the ordering process for meals will go at MHS. You can view that here
  • Picture Day is set for October 7th-more information to come later.
