SOLON SALUTES
A huge Solon Salute goes out to our Class of 2020 graduates, MaryAnn Songhurst and Mandy Abu Aziz, along with MHS alum Noele Riby-Williams for taking initiative in planning the Black Lives Matter event that took place at the State House this past Sunday. It has been estimated that over 3,000 people came from all over the state as a call to action against racism. We are proud of of their strong voices in this community and throughout the state of Vermont.
UPCOMING COMMUNICATION/EVENTS:
- 2019-2020 MHS Awards: We are pleased to announce that several MHS students have been chosen to receive an award or recognition for an accomplishment this year at Montpelier High School. We will be honoring this year’s recipients in a full-page ad in The Bridge on June 17. Certificates and awards will be mailed to students, or someone will contact students to arrange delivery. Congratulations from the MHS Staff
- Final Grades: Final reporting (P, PD, INC) will be posted by June 19th and the report card will also be sent out to families the following week. Unfortunately, when we changed to a completely different system mid semester, it did not coincide with our reporting system pre-COVID 19. Although you can click on the blue bracket in each marking period of each class to see assignments along with the P, PD, or I on the right side, you will not necessarily see a final score for Semester 2. Because we went to a different reporting system, teachers were asked to input each assignment under a "formative" score which has no bearing on a student's overall grade or gpa. It is meant to be a score that shows feedback and progress toward proficiency. Teachers will need to input each final grade based on the assignments that were turned in and whether the student received a P, PD, or INC. Without a doubt, this has not been the most fluid or flexible approach to reporting; however, teachers will get the final reporting scores in and we'll send them your way. Should you have questions ahead of time, please feel free to reach out to the teacher directly.
- Drivers Education: The State has announced earlier this week that students can in Drivers Ed courses can start driving again on July 1st. At this time, we do not offer a summer program, and we are working to figure out how we will get these hours completed with our students who were enrolled in the spring semester. As soon as we have a plan moving forward, we will make sure to communicate this out to both students and families ASAP.
- Distance Learning Feedback from Students: Please take a few moments to fill out this survey to provide us with some feedback as we move forward into our planning for the fall. We will close the survey on June 19th. Thank you!
- A reminder that the MRPS Chromebook Collection Day will be tomorrow, Friday, June 12, at MHS and RVS (7 am to 2 pm at MHS, 11 am to 1 pm at RVS). Please only return student Chromebooks on June 12 and all other MHS materials on June 11.
- Yearbook Distribution: A part of our 2019-2020 yearbook is delayed by the company. We are hoping we will be ready for yearbook pick up the week of June 15th. I will make sure to communicate once yearbooks are ready to go.
- Schedules for 2020-2021: Because there is so much uncertainty around what school will look like in the fall, we are going to hold off on preparing and printing schedules until we have a solid plan moving forward. Usually students have these schedules in hand before they leave for the summer, but this may be 'false advertising' for the fall. I will keep in communication over the summer regarding schedules and any changes, as will our Superintendent.
SENIOR NEWS:
- Please join the Class of 2020 by watching their Graduation on Friday at 6 pm. Class of 2020 Graduation Activities link. If you are unable to watch it then, it will be up for, at least, the summer.
SUMMER ENRICHMENT
Summer Enrichment Opportunity: Mountain Biking!
I hope this email finds you safe and well. While many things have changed, we have endeavored to offer programming this summer that meets Department of Education, National, and State guidelines around the current pandemic. Our 2 Mountain Bike weeks will be housed off-site (except for day 1, where we meet at MHS). With the local trail options available, students attending will need to be versed in riding trails to at least some degree, as many of the trail systems we will be riding are challenging and narrow. We will focus on learning skills, honing capabilities, and challenging ourselves. Our earlier end time is reflective of the amount of ‘on bike’ time we will be having with kids. Without transportation, our day ‘in the saddle’ begins right at 9:00am, and except for on trail breaks and lunch, we will be riding pretty consistently. With the inability to transport students, we will be bound by weather, as there will be no indoor options! If serious weather threatens, we will be forced to cancel that day’s ride. That said, these weeks will be a ton of fun. Email me with any questions or concerns. DREWM@MPSVT.ORG
