SOLON AWESOMENESS!
MHS would like to bring awareness to both our school and Montpelier communities with regard to September being National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Although this communication is late in getting out to you, we want to recognize that cancer affects thousands of kids under the age of 20, including one of our own students at MHS. In an effort to support our student, the family, and any family who has to endure the pain of watching a child go through the inexplicable effects of cancer, we want to take a moment to recognize this month and its importance to thousands of families. You might have seen gold hearts around school and/or the community. This is an awareness campaign by the Pediatric Cancer Foundation called "Go Gold". Below are some statistics you might find compelling. If you'd like to know more about the Go Gold campaign, please go to https://www.acco.org/gogold/.
- About one in 285 Americans develop cancer before the age of 20.
- Each year 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in the USA.
- Even though cure rates for children with cancer have more than doubled in the past 40 years, cancer is responsible for the deaths of more children and adolescents than any other disease.
- Children diagnosed with cancer today have an 85% likelihood of cure thanks to advances in medical research and treatments.
- Survivors of childhood cancer are at risk for late-effects from therapy.
- There are approximately 350,000 adult survivors of childhood cancer in the US, with the number growing each year.
