ACADEMICS
  • Nov. 6th: Late start and picture re-take day. MHS will start at 10:00 am. However, students are encouraged to come earlier should they need picture re-takes.
GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
  • Attention Sophomores: Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership, or HOBY, is a youth leadership development organization. The HOBY mission is to inspire and develop a global community of youth dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. The HOBY Leadership Seminar is a four day commitment, this year taking place May 21st-24th, 2020 at St. Michael’s College*. The focus is on leadership skill development, with a strong emphasis on community service *Please note that this is Memorial Day weekend and can be a busy time for school and athletic events. Please note that HOBY's policy is that the students must be in attendance for the entirety of the seminar.  We are encouraging all sophomores to apply for this great opportunity to explore how to lead and make a difference. Two students and an alternate will be selected to represent MHS at no cost to you. See your guidance counselor if you want more information. Interested applicants should submit an entry answering the following question:
    • What does being an effective leader mean to you? Please cite examples of these qualities in action. You may draw on your experience from leadership you have witnessed in your school, community, government, or leaders from history.
    • Students may choose to answer to this question in one of a variety of ways (e.g., video, audio  clip, written essay - maximum one page). Entries should be submitted to Guidance by November 1, 2019.
  • For SENIORS: The VSAC Financial Aid Forms Night is a hands-on workshop to help parents of seniors and seniors complete the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA).  ANY student wanting consideration for federal or college based grants or scholarships must complete the FAFSA.  No student is considered for college based scholarships unless they have also completed the FAFSA.  Help is available in the workshop to complete the FAFSA and the Vermont Grant application.  Only minimal support is available for completing the CSS Profile. This workshop is only for parents of seniors and students graduating from high school in 2020. PLEASE go to www.studentaid.gov/fsaid and create a “Federal Student Aid ID” before coming in.  The student and one parent MUST have create their own separate “FSA ID”.  Students must also have a “MyVSAC” account - go here to develop that account: https://secureacctaccess.vsac.org/myvsac/.  Only the student needs this account. In order to complete the financial aid applications this evening the following forms are  necessary:
  • 2018 Federal income taxes with all schedules for both student and parents
  • Documents that list taxed and untaxed income for 2018 including SS and/or disability benefits
  • Monthly Reach UP family Assistance and food stamps/Vermont 3 Squares
  • Current balance of checking and savings for both student and parents
  • Child support paid and/or received in 2018
  • Home value and debt (if applicable)
  • Farm value and debt (if applicable)
  • Business value and debt (if applicable)
  • Investment value and debt (if applicable)
Parents and students must know their email and password to access email
  • GAP YEAR INFO NIGHT, Nov. 5 at 6 pm at MHS: Are you thinking about taking a gap year after high school? Montpelier High School is hosting an informational presentation with gap year expert Julia Rogers on Tuesday, November 5th from 6-7 pm. The presentation will cover the benefits, challenges and opportunities surrounding the gap year option. Julia will also cover the variety of programs available, how to plan for college deferment, goal-setting and how to keep it within your family's budget.  For more information, visit enroutegapyear.com or the Facebook Event Page.

SPORTS INFORMATION
  • Winter Sports Informational meeting for parents and students will be held on November 21st at 7 pm in the gym. 
  • MHS is looking for qualified and excited applicants to fill two vacant coaching positions this winter! Girls JV Basketball Head Coach/Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach. Any interested parties should send their resume to Athletic Director Matt Link (MatthewL@mpsvt.org).

ARTS INFORMATION
  • A Midsummer Night's Dream opens on November 1st! The tech team has been creating columns with paper mache every night this week until 8pm! Come sit in the new cushioned seats, check out the all-new LED lights, and enjoy a 1-hour adaptation of a Shakespeare classic. Tickets are ON SALE HERE
  • Grease Auditions! - Believe it or not, Grease auditions are coming up in November!!! Audition Prep is November 17th with auditions November 19th-21st. 
  • Logo Design Competition: Help us design a Logo for GREASE. The logo will be used on all posters, websites, programs, and promotional materials. Submission Deadline: November 15th. Please submit to Kianna Bromley
  • Solon Samba will be marching in the Veterans' Day Parade this year on Nov. 11 & the Winooski Valley Fall Music Festival is coming up at Harwood Union High School Nov. 21-22 with performances by MHS starting at 7pm Friday, Nov. 22. 
  • The MHS Fall Choral Concert is Friday, Nov. 14th at 7 pm in the MHS auditorium.
DISTRICT INFORMATION
  • Employment Opportunity: The Montpelier Roxbury School District has two openings for second shift custodians.  Hours are 2:00-10:30 p.m.  These positions qualify for a shift differential.  Interested candidates can pick up an application at the District Central Office at Montpelier High School or submit an application via SchoolSpring.com.  For further information about these positions, please contact Heather Michaud, Human Resource Coordinator, at 225-8682 or at heatherm@mpsvt.org
ENRICHMENT INFORMATION

  • 6-week after school fitness program for students grades 5-12th at Zenith, Montpelier’s fitness & movement studio is offering a It starts soon, Nov. 7th. Class meets on Thursdays from 3:15-4:15pm at Zenith’s studio, 50 Main Street. Parents may register for the whole 6-week series or pick and choose dates. Our goal is to keep students moving during the fall & winter months. 
  • Halloween Candy Drop Off: Nov. 1-5th in the main office lobby: This Halloween, local trick-or-treaters will join kids across the country when they donate their extra Halloween candy to Operation Gratitude at local collection sites. The sweet treats will be included along with handwritten thank you letters in Care Packages sent to U.S. Service Members deployed overseas, and hand delivered to Veterans and First Responders serving in their local communities. Operation Gratitude ​is a national nonprofit organization that provides tangible ways to forge strong bonds between Americans and their Military and First Responder heroes through volunteer service projects, acts of gratitude, and meaningful engagements in communities nationwide. Through its customized Care Package programs, Operation Gratitude has provided opportunities for millions of Americans to say “Thank You” to more than 2.3 million of our nation’s Heroes since 2003.  Other items that can be donated are:  All Purpose Wipes (Single & 30ct Packs or Less) Batteries (“AA” and/or “AAA”) Deodorant (Travel Size, non-aerosol) Drink Mix  (Individual Serving Packets .
