2018-19: Week 32

A Solon Salute to the Interact Club for cooking a meal for the homeless and thank you to everyone who donated money to support this cause!

A Solon Salute to the Participants of the Digital Narrative Project who shared their final pieces at the Youth Voice exhibit/ reception this week at the State House. Evie Caserta, Ethan Rubin, Maddie Friend, Lila Markow, Jordan Allen-Brandon, and Alex Smart displayed their work alongside student artists from around the state.


A Solon Salute to CBL student Lydiah Duncan, who has been helping to organize PoemCity with Community Partner Rachel Senechal. During the month of April, Montpelier comes together in celebration of National Poetry Month. More than 300 poems will grace the windows of downtown, and dozens of events celebrate the written word. Check out the Poem City Event Calendar and Poem City Poets and Locations. Many MHS poets are featured! Lydiah’s poem “The Book of Me” can be found at Rite Aid.

A Solon Salute to the MHS Unified Basketball Team. The team had a great home game this past week and was featured in the TimesArgus sports page.

A Solon Salute to MaryAnn Songhurst who gave a speech at the signing of the H.3 Ethnic and Social Equity Standards for Education Bill. Several members of MHS' Gender Sexuality Alliance, Racial Justice Alliance and faculty members were present for the signing as well. Junior, Hope Petraro, was also a part of helping to draft early versions of the bill. 

A Solon Salute to senior Mary Curran for being selected to the VT Senior All-Star Basketball Game, congrats Mary!

A Solon Salute to sophomores Tyler Ricker and Leo Riby-Williams for being selected to the Dream Dozen basketball team. This goes to 12 exceptional underclassman throughout the state.

A Solon Salute to juniors Mandy Abu Aziz, Juna Nagle, Hope Petraro, and MaryAnn Songhurst. They represented the Racial Justice Alliance in presenting at the New England Secondary School Consortium this past week. Great work!

  • April 1st: Presenter Dr. Michael Thompson, author of Raising Cain-Protecting the Emotional Lives of Boys, 6pm-7:30pm at UES Auditorium (Open to all). Full Flyer 
  • April 3: Robotics Demonstration in the Principal's Conference Room at 5:30pm. All invited. 
  • April 3: Afterschool program parent forum from 5:30 to 6:30pm in the MHS Cafeteria.
  • April 8: Clothing Swap! MHS will be set up in the auditorium to have a clothing swap on April 8th. Bring in your gently used clothing to join in the swap. Any clothes that go un-exchanged will be donated to charity. 
  • April 11: Starting April 3-4pm in the MHS Library "Girls Who Code"This club is open to any high school student who identifies as female, non-binary, or gender nonconforming and wants to be in a female-identified environment. If you are in grades 9-12 and are interested in joining, see me in the library or contact: Sue Monmaney susanm@mpsvt.org

2018-19: Week 31

A Solon Salute to the Unified Snowshoe Team and the Unified Basketball Team. The teams were great in recent competition!
  • The snowshoe team finished it's snowy winter season at Pico Mtn. at the Vermont State Unified Snowshoe Competition this past Wednesday. Lots of great fun, medals, ribbons and memories were had by all! Members of the 2018-2019 Unified Snowshoe Team were Bob Powell, Eliana Moorehead, Luke Brassard, Damon Cadwell-Dunham, Kat Pringles, Sophia Robins, Nadia Scoppettone, Curtis Hayden, Apolonia Tabacco and Mae Dunham
  • And, thanks to all who came out to cheer on the Unified Hoopsters this past week at the two home games - the team players, Owen Carswell, Kat Pringles, Aidan Murphy, Grace Murphy, Sophia Robins, Luke Brassard, Yvonne Roberge, Declan DeCarr, Bob Powell, Destiney Roberts, Noah McLane, Damon Cadwell-Dunham and Jack LaPera (Manager) really appreciated the support! Thanks!

A Solon Salute to 9th grade Quinn Fleischer who recently participated in the Vermont USA Gymnastics State Competition. Quinn placed second on floor and fourth on bars. Congratulations Quinn!

A Solon Salute to math teacher Whitney Machnik. She graciously made herself available to come to the middle school on Tuesday from 8:15 - 10:15 to teach two math classes while the teacher and I (Amy Kimball) went and observed two other classrooms and then debriefed what we saw after. This made a big positive difference for us! (Thanks from Amy Kimball)

Announcements 
  • The Interact Club is seeking donations to help feed the homeless and others in need. We will be collecting money and food donations during TA from now until Thursday, March 28. The TA that raises the most money and food will win donuts. Proceeds will fund a meal for the homeless cooked by Interact Club and the remaining food and money will be donated to the Montpelier Food Pantry.
  • Ages 10-21, please vote! MHS students recently submitted Youth4Youth grant proposals for three amazing projects: The Empower Vermont Festival, The Dog River Podcast, and The Grateful for Youth Yoga Project. There is a lot of money (more than $25,000) available to fund incredible youth-organized projects here and around the state- please weigh in about the opportunities you would like to see funded.  Voting is open to Vermonters between the ages of 10 and 21. The deadline to vote is 3/31Read more about the proposals and vote here!

A Solon Salute to Randi Carpenter and Ray Sparrow who helped put together and host the CVCC Tech News Quarter 2 as part of their learning with the Digital Media Arts II program. Well done!

A Solon Salute to 9th grader, Sam Watson. Sam recently took 2nd place in the local Rotary Speech Contest. Congratulations Sam! 

A Solon Salute to Destiney Roberts, who has been busy preparing baked goods to provide for the bake sale during the intermission at this week's production of Our Town. Destiney's CBL experience this semester consists of assisting in the UES Pre-K classroom one morning per week and baking for Community Partners and school events one to two mornings per week. We salute you, Destiney!

A Solon Salute to 11th grader, Hunter Dutton. Hunter recently started his own podcast, Dog River Podcast. I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Hunter on Friday. Look for that episode soon. Great website, logo (by Randi Carpenter), and podcasts Hunter. You're on your way! (From Mr. McRaith)

  • WATER NEWS: MRPS continues to work with the Vermont Department of Health concerning our lead testing results. Andrew LaRosa and a representative from the Department of Health presented at the school board meeting on 3/6/2019. You can view that presentation at this link. It begins at the 26:35 mark in the video. In addition, the latest testing results and remediation plan can be viewed on the facilities page on the MRPS website. Host families do not need to have kids at U-32 or MHS...empty nesters, retired folks, music lovers, etc. All are welcome to apply. Information and requirements are as follows:

  • Provide: place to sleep (bed, sofa-bed, air mattress, camping pads etc), breakfast, a few snacks for the day and transportation to and from school. Lunch and dinner provided by U-32

A Solon Salute to the MHS Debate team who participated with 4 teams at the State Tournament on Saturday (March 9th) at the State House in Montpelier where only the first 24 team in the State qualified and were able to compete. Violet Tabacco and Basil Humke (U-32) were semifinalist and obtained third place overall and Sonya Sagan-Dworsky and Neil Rohan obtained 8th place overall.

MHS Masque Theater Club presents Our Town by Thornton Wilder, March 14th-16th to a 60-seat audience on the stage at MHS. With such a small house, we will absolutely be tight on seats so please order your tickets in advance HERE In addition, that evening, we will be featuring the work of local artists in our showcase titled "Montpelier, Our Town". We look forward to seeing you there at 7pm Thursday through Saturday night!

    2018-19: Week 28

    A Solon Salute to the Boys' Basketball Team who earned the #2 spot in the Division 2 playoff rankings. Solons host the opening round playoff game tonight (Tuesday 3/5) at 7pm! Come down and support the team! 


    A Solon Salute to our MHS Robotics Team, Capital Robotics. They were the 2nd highest placing Vermont team and finished 11 out of 32 regional teams in their recent tech challenge! You can view their matches in the full video here.     A Solon Salute and Congratulations to the Montpelier hockey players who are playing with the U-32 Hockey teams this season. The boy's finished up their season recently and the girls play tonight (Tuesday) in the second round of playoffs.

    A Solon Salute to senior to Meredith Stetter who just completed the Eastern Cup Qualifier Races to earn her spot on the New England Junior National Team! Meredith will travel to Anchorage, Alaska in early March to compete in a week long series of races to determine which region of the country has the best Junior National Team.

    A Solon Salute to Susha Benoit who continues to improve her Russian speaking skills. Susha has been participating in the UVM Russian House events, like making a traditional Russian salad, both working on her own Russian with the professor and helping first and second year Russian Language college students with their spoken Russian. Khoroshaya rabota!

    A Solon Salute to the seven MHS students participating in the Vermont State Math Fair at UVM this coming April. Congratulations to Julian Stoller, Jenna Krussman, Aylwin Morgan, Jack Heyerdahl, Declan Decarr, Kasi McCann, and Loren Stephens for taking on an independent project of their choice in the fields of mathematics or computer science.
