2016-17: Week 42

A Solon Salute and Congratulations to the Class of 2017! On Friday, we celebrated their graduation in the gym with hundreds of family members and friends. The students giving speeches, performing, and singing all did a great job. Thank you to all of the staff that make the graduation ceremony possible, with a special thanks to senior advisors Heather McLane and Val Belanger. (Times Argus Article)

A Solon Salute to Mary Ellen Solon, Sylvia Fagin and the MHS QSA for hosting their first annual Lavender Graduation last week. The first of many!

A Solon Salute to the Boys' Soccer Team and Coach Bill Basa. On Saturday morning from 8:00am to 12:00pm, 14 boys soccer players and 2 coaches do the VT Food Bank 'Sort-a-thon.'  They worked hard and steady for that time. They packed food boxes to supply 720 Seniors for one month and over 600 families for a month. This work is a part of a pilot program with the Helper Helper APP. The boys' soccer team is currently using the a APP to learn about local volunteer opportunities and track the time they spend volunteering in the community. In two different events, the team has logged 84 hours of service.

A Solon Salute to Heather McLane and her PSS Students for sharing their formulated opinions in local newspapers over the last month on important societal issues. Several student opinion pieces have been published and they provide the central Vermont community with the important perspectives, opinions and ideas for action that MHS students have. Thank you for helping to build an informed Vermont citizenry.

A Solon Salute to Emma Harter, Nadia Scoppetone, Matt Koucky, and Izzy Maine-Torres for spending a couple of hours tackling invasive species along the bike path when they had a lot of other work to do to finish summatives. Thank you also to community member Emily Markstein for leading us in the work and teaching us how to "girdle" a tree.

A Solon Salute to all of those who contributed to making the canoe gift possible in honor of former MHS teacher, Bill Haines. The canoe served as part of the celebration of Bill's life over the weekend, and it will join the canoeing program at MHS next fall.

A Note from our Health & Wellness Coordinator:
As we celebrate the end of another great year, check out the Health and Wellness Blog and bookmark it for future reference. You will find helpful information there about programs to support your child's health and wellness here at school. Also, welcome Adrienne Gil, our new coordinator, who is also a parent of 2 students at UES. She will lead the team in focusing on improving the Food Service this year by providing support to our new Food Service Director. We will need the help of all those interested! To join in the fun, contact Adrienne at healthwellness@mpsvt.org.
