2016-2017: Week 43 (Final Week of the School-Year)

A Solon Salute to the incoming Class of 2021! On June 22nd, we welcomed the class of 2021 to Montpelier High School. As a part of their welcome, we showed them this short slide show. We emphasized that Montpelier High School is a school where everyone belongs and a place where there is tremendous opportunity to get involved. We encourage the class of 2021 to jump in and make a positive contribution to our shared community. The slideshow uses images from the 2016-17 Solon Salutes.

A Solon Salute and a humble thank you to the Estate of Alan Weiss and his family. They recently made a significant donation to Montpelier High School. The donation will help support student leadership and the theater program for years to come. In order to help make decisions about the distribution of funds, MHS will be setting up a committee with school administration, staff, students, and parents represented. A Solon Salute to the following students who went the entire 2016-17 school year with perfect attendance! Mallory Belleville, Danny Bruce, Luke Hawley, Isaac Maddox-White and Azwayla Taylor.

A Solon Salute from the Flexible Pathways corner of MHS! Independent learning is when an individual is able to think, act, and pursue his/her studies without the same level of support from a teacher at school. It requires a certain skill set to be successful: motivation to do your work; resilience to overcome challenges; excellent time management; and often times, but not always, strong reading and writing skills; organization and the ability to multi-task; as well as initiative and self-advocacy. We recognize the way Heather Swiatocha took the foundation she had of these skills and improved them significantly as she journeyed through her online "Game Design with Scratch" course. Congratulations on your highly successful course completion, Heather! (From Ms. DiLena)

A Solon Salute to Noel Riby-Williams and Rosie Harper who recently finished independent projects that culminated with the publications of their respective books. Rosie and Noel worked with Ms. McCadden and Ms. DiLena in the Flexible Pathways program.

A Solon Salute to the The AP Spanish class who spent the last marking period exploring what life is like for immigrants living and working on Vermont's dairy farms. They created a half-hour radio program to share their learning. They put a lot of work into this project and the results are impressive! The program aired last Thursday at 11am on WGDR

A Solon Salute to Emma-Murray Clasen and Joelyn Mensah for recently being awarded the 2017 Solon Award. To read the details of this award and a short explanation of their contributions click here.

A Solon Salute to MHS alumni, Garrett Graff who was recently interviewed on NPR's Fresh Air about his new book. Click Here to Listen

Announcements:
  • Construction: Starting on June 26th, there will be significant construction taking place in the pairs of bathrooms on the west end of the building. The downstairs lockers will also be replaced starting on June 26th. There will be construction noise and traffic in the building, please plan accordingly.
  • Announcing Solon Block! Additional information will be shared at the start of 2017-18, but the MHS leadership team is happy to share the news about our new daily schedule. This 30 minute block will allow all teachers and all students to be available at the same time. An easy-to-use piece of online software will help us stay organized. The software will allow students to "book" themselves with a teacher, and teachers to "book" students into their classrooms as well. The goal is to provide additional support on challenging topics, time to connect on missed work, run some small groups, increase the time dedicated to personalized learning plans, and have a built-in time for the assemblies that come up throughout the year. Here is the New Bell Schedule for 2017-18.
