2018-19: Week 24

A Solon Salute to all of the city workers who worked quickly in the cold weather to fix the broken water pipe in town. And a Salute to our MHS community for making things work at school during the boil-water days.

A Solon Salute to senior Meredith Stetter. Meredith competed recently in the Supertour 10k Classic Mass Start Race on the very difficult Olympic Course at Lake Placid, NY. Several Olympian and World Cup skiers were in the race and Meredith placed 46th overall out of 95 Skiers. Most impressively she placed 5th in her U20 age group and beat out skiers from Williams College, St Lawrence College, Stratton Mountain School, and Carleton University. Great job Meredith!

A Solon Salute to Racial Justice Alliance advisor Sarika Tandon, and members MaryAnn Songhurst and Hope Petraro, for their recent testimony in support of House Bill H.3. They bill passed unanimously with the House Education Committee and will now be on the house floor for consideration.

A Solon Salute to the MHS Student Council and advisor Ron Allen for their leadership in hosting the Red Cross for a Blood Drive this past week. Well done, thank you!
Sam Watson helped to check in donors
A Solon Salute to 9th grader, Taylor Nunnelley who put together this great video footage from Monday's trip to Jay Peak which several students attended with Community Connections (during the teacher in-service).

A Solon Salute to Noam Hessler who obtained fourth place as an individual speaker out of 56 participants at the Burlington High School Debate Tournament last Saturday. Nice work Noam!

A Solon Salute to the Racial Justice Alliance who hosted two short assemblies for the school this week, welcomed the I AM VT TOO photo gallery, and hosted the Music of Color Dance on Friday night. Thank you!

A Solon Salute to Hope Petraro who represented MHS Earth Group and the VT Youth Lobby during a Press Conference at the VT State House on Wed 1/23. The Youth Lobby is 1 of 25 signatories on the Climate Action Plan for 2019.

A Solon Salute to Warren Cossett, Saskia Cousins-Joyce, Isaak Donahue, Sina Fallahi, Lily Fournier, and Jenna Krussman for volunteering to give a tour and host a group of visiting students during Student Shadow Day. They did an impressive job presenting our school to our guests and represented MHS proudly. Thank you for a job well done! (From Nancy & Val)

A Solon Salute to Davis Hart, whose work with Community Partner Sheriff Sam Hill of the Washington County Sheriff's Department has grown and evolved since his first CBL experience during his freshman year. During this time, Davis has participated in many ride-alongs and court observations. Davis also obtained paid employment within their office over the past summer and potentially this summer as well. These opportunities have opened up because of Davis's ability to form strong professional relationships with everyone he has encountered over the past several years; he has respectfully and wholly pursued each and every connection as a learning opportunity. Davis also works as a Tobacco Minor for the Department of Liquor Control (stemming from a CBL placement last year) and is applying to participate in the summer Vermont Law Cadet Program. We salute you, Davis, for seizing these opportunities so fully and earnestly!

A Solon Salute to senior Adam Blair for his kind willingness to help all things audio and visual that happen at MHS. And for the great photos along the way too. Thank you Adam!

A Solon Salute to Jordan Allen-Brandon, who spearheaded last week's Digital Narrative Project in collaboration with The Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and The Threshold Collaborative. Jordan, along with Community Partner Chani Waterhouse of The Vermont Network, organized a two-day workshop for students to explore digital storytelling and build their own narratives which illustrate what healthy and empowering relationships look like. Jordan's commitment to building a more just, healthy and peaceful community is apparent in her past and present CBL experiences with Vermont Commission on Women and The Vermont Network. We salute you, Jordan! And...a hearty Solon Salute to the students who devoted two days (including Monday's inservice day) to the project: Ethan Rubin, Evie Caserta, Maddie Friend, Apollonia Tabacco, Alex Smart, Emma Harter, and Lila Markow. It was a powerful two days of collaboration and creativity. Thank you all for your commitment to this project!

A Solon Salute to the Intro to Computer Science students and our community partners who worked together to make these videos on the application of computational thinking. This project was in conjunction with the Maine Math Science Alliance. Nice job everyone! Click image to view.
