A Solon Salute to Nathan DeGroot whose year-long participation in the What's the Story? culminated with Outright Vermont presenting his co-created film 'Trans What?' A Breaking Binary Production. The event was held at Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center in Burlington on June 1st at 7pm. The film will be released for general viewing' look for it here soon. We salute you for the film, Nathan, as well as for being so articulate, informative, and funny as a member of the Q & A panel that followed the film.
  • What Nathan says about the film ~ "It shows the dichotomous experiences for transgender students in two Vermont schools, one really bad and one really good, and how to bring those two stories together to learn now to make positive changes for transgender students in all our schools."
  • What Nathan says of What's the Story? ~ "The real driver of this course is passion. All the students are here because they care about something; all the teachers are here because they care about the students. To have access to a course that allows you to advocate for the issues you are passionate about, learn things, and propel yourself into the world of film making is truly a gift." (From Ms. DiLena)

A Solon Salute to Riley Cook and Rachel Sucher, members of MHS' Substance Abuse Prevention group, for promoting awareness on World No Tobacco Day. At the May 31st event, students learned about the harmful impacts of tobacco products on the body and the consequences of nicotine use on the brain. Community members were also given the opportunity to share their concerns about flavored tobacco products and the lengths to which tobacco companies advertise to youth by participating in a postcard writing campaign sponsored by Counterbalance (www.counterbalancevt.com). A special thanks to Ann Gilbert and Ginny Burley of the Central Vermont New Directions Coalition for supporting this effort with resources and materials (cvndcorg.ipage.com).
