2016-17: Week 12

Announcements:
  • The interact club is doing a small food drive for the Holidays. There will be a box in the lobby this Monday & Tuesday. The food will go to a Montpelier food pantry. The food pantry asked for proteins like tuna and peanut butter specifically, due to increased demand almost all of the food pantries in town are very low this year.
  • The last call for MHS Spirit Wear is November 22nd! It is very easy to order with our new online order form. You can pay online as well! Here is a link to the order form: ORDER FORM FOR MHS SPIRIT WEAR Additionally, here is the link MHS Boosters Facebook page for announcements, and more.

A Solon Salute and big thanks to the helping hands of: Julie Richardson, Gary Masure, Alberto Sanz Gobernado, Ethan Eldred, and Tristan Timpone for helping to serve, clean up, greet visitors, etc. at Union Elementary School's Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. A Solon Salute to the MHS Scholars' Bowl Team. MHS hosted the Green Mountain Regional Scholars' Bowl competition this week. The 18 teams participating were from Burlington High School, CVU, Essex, North Country, Cabot, Lyndon Institute, and Montpelier. MHS fielded four teams across three brackets. MHS A: Nathan Grutchfield, Asa Richardson-Skinder, Graham Janson, and Matt Koucky, went 3-2 on the afternoon in the top bracket. MHS B: Banyan Thompson, Clayton Winters, Omeed Fallahi, and Rachel Sucher, the first time together as a team this year, went 2-3.

MHS C: Henry Jones, Henry Valentine, and Cole Bingham, competing for the first time this year went 1-4, also against strong competition. In the novice bracket, first year participants Anders Shenholm, Emma Harter, and Apollonia Tobacco lodged an impressive 3-2 result in their first interscholastic competition. It was a great afternoon in terms of success and experience gathering for the MHS Scholars' Bowl team. (From Mr. Tillitson)

A Solon Salute to senior Tucker Odum for his participation in the democratic process on Election Day, seen here  "manning" a check-in station and directing voters at City Hall in Montpelier. Thank you, Tucker for your service and citizenship, as well as for aiding many people in exercising their rights and responsibilities as citizens of our local, state, and national communities. Well done!

A Solon Salute to the Planting Hope brigade from Nicaragua that visited all Spanish classes last week. The students absolutely loved the visit!  From song and dance to detailed discussions about the Sandanista Revolution, and silly kids games using Spanish to art critiques, all students were actively engaged in authentic learning! Thanks again for the opportunity to broaden their learning! (Profa Purcell)

A Solon Salute to English Teacher, Kerrin McCadden who was nominated for a Pushcart Prize last weekend! In case the Pushcarts are a thing you don't know, it means that the editors of this particular journal chose Kerrin's poem as one of their favorite poems they published in the past year. It gets forwarded to a committee that chooses the best of the best for an anthology called The Pushcart Prize Anthology. Here is the poem: The Mother Talks To Her Son About Her Heart
