2018-19: Week 1

A Solon Salute to the summer 2018 Food, Farm, and Society crew. The following students did an incredible job on the school gardens, hoop house, chickens and fish. They built a rooftop garden over the pizza oven and welcomed 40 meat birds that are being raised for this year's Fall Harvest Celebration. Montpelier High School: Stella Best, Zach Clark, Izzy Davis, Brecken Shea, Kailea Silvers, & Will Toth. From U32: Townes Degroot, Grae Moriath, Greta Sabo and from Harwood: Jackson Greenleaf, Taite Plagge. And a Solon Salute to Mr. Sabo for all of his leadership on this work. The gardens look fantastic!

SUMMER 2018 COMMUNITY BASED LEARNING (CBL)

Zach Taylor interned with UVM Chemistry Department and immersed himself in lab issues and processes related to synthetic organic chemistry.  Zach's primary community partner was Magenta Hensinger.

Hope Petraro interned with UVM Chemistry Department and immersed herself in (this written by Hope) ....."the use of various biochemical assays and spectroscopic techniques to understand the role of Phenylalanine 23 residue in the heme degradation mechanism of IsdG."  - ask Hope for translation.  :)   Hope's primary community partner was Biswash Thakuri .

Remi Savard innovated a very cool music project where he facilitated community jam sessions /lessons every week with residents at Westview Meadows senior living residence.  Remi's work and innovation targeted building wellness (using music as the focus) for senior residents in our community.   Special thanks to Nicole DuPont, Activities Director at Westview, for supporting Remi's work.  


Jack LaPera was a successful second year summer intern with the Montpelier Roxbury School District IT team helping to organize, catalogue and inventory digital  devices and technology. Special thanks to Russell Leete for his dedicated second year mentorship of Jack as his community partner. Thanks!

Eleanor Braun immersed herself in a substantive internship at Ben & Jerry's corporate offices in South Burlington working on issues related to sustainability and effective ways of promoting and communicating socially responsible business practices to the public.  Rob Michalak, Director of Global Social Impact, was a fantastic community partner. Thanks!


Nadia Scoppettone completed her summer CBL with Jen Pia-Neddleman, midwife and owner of Born Homebirth, working with both Jen and her patients (families and newborns). What an experience it was for Nadia to be able to have this type of unique experience. And, a Salute to all of the families who allowed Nadia to take part in these important family experiences.

Sarvesh Sharma immersed himself into a deep learning experience working as an intern with Union Mutual Insurance Co. Sarvesh worked closely with a number of Union Mututal employeess and spent a significant amount of time learning and contributing to the work of Actuarial Department.  Special bonus -MHS Alum - Aaron Halpine (Class of 2009) was his primary community partner.  Cool.  (PS - if ya need any help with Excel Spreadsheets - ask Sarvesh - just sayin'.)

Evie Caserta tapped into her creative side working with Lost Nation Theater Summer Camps as a teaching intern.  What fun! Special thanks to Taryn Noelle, for supporting Evie's time with the camps. 

Liam Hecht furthered his growing passion for blacksmithing by interning with KingFisher Forge and Construct Custom Wood and Metal Work this summer.  His time interning afforded him important exposure to a variety of techniques, tools and tricks of the artisan trade.  Special thanks to Chris Eaton and Ben Cheney (another bonus MHS alum partner) for being such dedicated community partners.
