2017-18: Week 38

***Reminder***
Our Student-Led Conferences date of May 24th is almost here! Please note that 11th graders will be taking the new statewide standardized science assessment from 8am to 10am. Lunch deli bar will be served from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

A Solon Salute
to 10th grader MaryAnn Songhurst. MaryAnn was recently awarded a full scholarship to the 2018 Telluride Association Sophmore Seminar (TASS) at Cornell University. This is a highly selective admissions process and very big honor and opportunity for MaryAnn. Her time at Cornell this summer with TASS will be in the "Shades of Blackness: Exploring Race, Gender, and Sexuality in the African Diaspora through Performance, Film, Music, and Art" seminar. Congratulations MaryAnn, we salute you!

A Solon Salute this week to Nathan DeGroot for his ongoing activism on a variety of local, state, and national issues. This week, Nathan spoke at the Statehouse, as Gov. Phil Scott signed a bill into law Friday that requires single-user public restrooms in Vermont to be designated gender neutral. The law takes effect July 1, 2018. We salute you, Nathan!

A Solon Salute to all of the students who participated in the All State Music Festival last week: Clayton Winters and Angus Fraser sang in the choir. Grace Carlomagno, Eleanor Braun, Max Hughes, and Colin Desch played in the orchestra. Evan and Ada Rohan played in the band. And Remi Savard and Liam Mears played in the jazz band.

A Solon Salute to all the seniors that helped out at the Project Graduation Corporate Cup Coin Drop. $828, most ever! Also, a huge shout out to Tom Allen and his crew for their work parking cars! And Angus Montgomery for being the Solon Owl!

Owl Sculpture Go-Fund-Me: Art teacher Barb Austin-Hutchins is collaborating with MHS alumni Sean Williams to raise money for a 10 foot tall original granite sculpture to be placed in the MHS roundabout. For more details on the project click: "Life is short, art is long.
